Pinnies for mini bakers

Hello!

This is just a very quick post tonight to show you a quick project I finished today for a friend’s school. I say quick – I mean time taken to make rather than time since she asked the favour. Unfortunately multiple migraines have meant it’s a couple of months since she asked for help.

She teaches in a primary school and they’d decided to do a Great British Bake Off inspired event featuring teams of 6 children competing against one another. All competitors were to get a prize (these kids aren’t even 7 yet) but the team that worked best together were to get a special prize.

Any chance I could make 6 aprons? And print a design on them?

Hmm.

Aprons are no problem, I’ve made several in the past for the children and as gifts. But printing? Help!

In the end I purchased some emerald green cotton drill from Fabworks in Dewsbury, together with some craft ribbon printed with “Tuck In” which seemed apt. I traced the only bought apron the girls have as a template, added a bit more on for seam allowance and cracked on with cutting out from my 1m of fabric.

And then the migraines kicked in.

Eventually, wonder Mum took the bag of pre cut fabric from me, got her machine out and finished the edges by turning under and doing a wide zigzag with a short stitch length all the way around.

Thanks Mum!

I sewed the ribbons on and then moved on to printing.

This is all new to me but I trundled off to Hobbycraft and bought some reusable star templates, a tube of fabric paint in a bottle with a little pen on the end and another without the pen bit. A quick rummage in the painting box (the girls were in bed, they won’t know) and I’d liberated a little sponge on a stick.

Half an hour later and we have 6 mini pinnies ready to go!

All in all they don’t look bad. And I discovered I quite like the fabric painting – should the excuse arise I’d happily have another play with that!

Have you discovered any new skills lately? And how do you respond to being asked a sewing favour?
