Zig zag Sallie

Hi there!

So, following my previous post all about the Sallie jumpsuit, I thought I’d share my first version of the pattern with you; the maxi dress.

I’d been wondering about a jersey maxi for a while as I’ve one from Oasis from a couple of years back which I always reach for to look put together when it’s hot. Then I saw Jess’ gorgeous version in Art Gallery fabrics jersey and decided to give this one a go.

I downloaded the pdf and, for the first time, sent it off to be printed at a copy shop.

So worth it!

I had this Girl Charlee chevron fabric from a while ago when it was on sale. It’s a straight cotton jersey without that much stretch but looks and feels fresh and clean for a holiday wardrobe.

I’ve a feeling that it’s probably also see through with the sun behind it! 😳

The pattern came together really easily although less speedily than some other jersey makes I’ve done, simply because there are more elements to it with the pockets and ties to turn inside out.

That probably took the most time of the whole make! I used a trick May Martin showed us last year at the Simplicity Blog Meet, running a very long overlocker chain down the inside of my fabric before finishing the side seam with the same continuous thread and using that to pull them through; still takes forever though!

I also used stretch interfacing instead of clear elastic to stabilise the neckline and I’m really happy with the results; I think on a neckline like this which isn’t going to need to stretch too much, it gives a really smooth finish and is so much easier!

I’m really happy with the finished dress, it’s so comfy and I’m surprised how much I like the tank top. I would make it again in something less lightweight and see through, maybe an Art Gallery jersey like Jess if I were feeling extravagant!

But this version is the perfect easy to wear holiday dress; win!

Any thoughts on other perfect holiday dress patterns?

(Oh, and blog photos courtesy of my 6 year old again, hence mad poses!)

    1. Thanks Jane! I’d never used it before either, ordered some ages ago when Lucy on Sew Essential mentioned it and then just left it in the box of supplies for some reason! Typical me, all excited about something new and then too scared to use it x
